Ecco apparire una delle band piu`apprezzate e sulla bocca dei meglio locali californiani. Chris Freeman, gia` bassista e former con Jon Ginoli dei quotati Pansy Division, ha avuto tempo e piacere di presentarci la sua attuale band.
Da quattro anni circa, i tacchi dei Gayc Dc battono il tempo dei vari palchi. Onore al merito, dunque, ed ecco quanto accade oggigiorno.
Ben felice di aver avuto questa occasione, ho sottoposto a Cris alcune domande:
Ciao ! E Benvenuto !Grazie per aver accettato questa intervista oltreoceano. Ti conosciamo gia` da tempo per il successo dei Pansy Division, musica stilosa e testi d`attitudine. Ma con questo supergruppo possiamo notare come la qualita` si accentua, vedendoti come frontman. Come ti e` balenata l`idea di creare ex novo una band tribute degli Ac_Dc ? Ci hai pensato da solo o e` arrivata conoscendo vari membri dell`attuale line up?
Ciao e Grazie! Mi sono spostato da San Francisco a LA nel 2001, dove ho incontrato un vasto gruppo di musicisti gay, oltre che ad una prosperosa e variegata scena musicale. Attorno al 2003, alcuni di loro mi hanno chiesto se fossi interessati a seguirli nella gay/band tributo Go GO, chiamata ovviamente Gay Gay.
Per questo motivo, dopo 10 lunghi anni , abbiamo deciso di smettere, nonostante abbiamo continuato a suonare nei vari after/party per Jane Wiedlin. Per il feeling instaurato, alcuni di noi hanno continuato a suonare assieme, trovando un nuovo e originale nome che contenesse la parola “Gay”.
Quando infine Karl ha pronunciato ” Gayc/Dc” ho pensato “.. Si! Puo andare bene ! “
A tal proposito, come potresti presentarci i vari componenti? Come hanno iniziato a identificarsi nellla Band ?
Sia Karl (chitarra ritmica) che Brian (batteria) erano amici che conoscevo da anni , avendoli infine introdotti ad alcune fasi finali della carriera dei Gay Gay. Ho incontrato Steve (prima chitarra) in Daddyhunt, un sito Gay per incontri. Stavo dando un occhio ai vari profili, quando ho incontrato questo fantastico ragazzo, notando che era un chitarrista.
Messaggiandogli, ho chiesto se gli piacevano gli Ac/Dc e se fosse interessato a suonare con noi. Dopo averci seguito abbiamo iniziato a cercare un cantante per un bel po` di tempo.. E quando ad una certa nessuno si e` presentato, ho infine dato la mia disponibilità chiedendo di ascoltarmi in un audizione. Quando mi e` stato dato accesso, ho chiesto a Glen (incontrato durante un tour con i Pansy Division) di suonare il basso.
La Vostra presenza sul palco e` decisamente accattivante, e sa intrattenere. Quando vi preparate per un tour, quanto tempo dedicate per trucco e parrucco? Make up e uniformi danno al pubblico quel piu` di divertimento.
Come ci impegniamo per la qualità del suono, poniamo quintali di attenzione ai vestiti per apparire sul palco.
E abbiamo progredito notevolmente, credo, notando alcune delle ultime foto superfighe. Una delle cose che fin da subito ho cercato di incoraggiare agli altri Gayc Dc e` stato di mantenere le proprie personalità, rimanendo saldi. L`estetica degli AC Dc e`sempre stata semplice, maglietta e blu jeans. Tutti quindi, eccetto l`uniforme da scolaro, sono alquanto simili.
Io vesto magliette, ma tolgo vari strati ogni quanto lo show va avanti. Per Angus,contando l`icona che egli stesso riveste, abbiamo pensato di evolvere con una gonnellina da studentessa.Ma allo stesso tempo, Steve indossa una cravatta, per cui l`immaginario e` presso che identico ma leggermente capovolto.
Era il 2015 quando avete invitato sul palco Sebastian Bach ? Quante voci sono circolate prima che vi siete trovati in studio per provare?
Il primo show dei Gayc Dc avviene nel 2013, percio` avevamo avuto gia` un seguito con Sebastian, ma tuttavia, fin dall`inizio, il pubblico ha sempre reagito preso bene .
Avete mai pensato di registrate per una casa discografica, un LP con le vostre cover preferite?
No, non credo ci siano troppe persone interessate a questo mio progetto. (Presentarle sui palchi e` gia ` un successo) Sicuramente alcune (ci piacciono), ma non sufficientemente da mettere in discussione le spese di ogni singolo per l`incisione.
In piu` scrivo da compositore, quindi voglio soltanto investire sul mio prodotto.
Dunque, un`aggettivo per definire Steve, Glen, Karl e Brian.
Beh.. una parola e` alquanto difficile, quindi ne daro` almeno 2 per ognuno.
Steve/ Chitarrista geniale, Glen/ intrattenitore della band, Karl/ Immediato nelle soluzioni, Brian/ spirito drammatico.
Cosa ne penseresti di una band cover dei Pansy Division, ma in versione etero ?
E come Bon e Angus hanno reagito alle vostre eccelse versioni?
Sarebbe strafigo ! Magari sarebbero tutte donne! So che si sta lavorando ad un progetto riguardo ad un tributo ai Pansy Division, inoltre un gruppo di Seattle , gli Shaolin Monks ( un membro e`gay ) coverizzano “Dick of Death”.. detto fatto !
Per quanto ne so la comunita` AC/DCe` a conoscenza di Noi, ma non sono certo sulle visualizzazioni Youtube, visto che quelle abbiamo.
Infine, come riassumeresti la tua Carriera dagli Atachments ad oggi ?
Bravo, vedo che hai studiato !
Intanto gli Atachments sono stati il mio terzo gruppo quando vivevo a Seattle ! E prima di Loro, ho avuto un1altra band chiamata Relic (cito il titolo dell`album dei Pink Floyd) tra il 1979 e il 1980. Dopodiche`, ho iniziato a frequentare un gruppo chiamato Little Wing nel 1980, dove abbiamo suonato il nostro primo NW Metal Fest nel Lake Hills Roller Rink in Bellevue,WA, in 1981 con TKO and The Mob ( una band tributo che poi sarebbe ecoluta nei Queensryche ¨ e sticazzi ¨ ). Gli Atachments crebbero dai Little Wing e furono attivi tra il 1982 ed il 1985. Registrammo un album, un EP, ed alcuni singoli prima di scioglierci.
Ecco pero` che 3 membri su 6 rimasero uniti, e cercammo di progredirci, includendo di spostarci a San Francisco nel 1987 e suonare in un paio di date alla Vox Opera. Tutto fini` realmente nel 1989 quando andai letteramente alla deriva, accontentandomi di suonare in qualche band locale.
(includo Model Citizenz assieme al tastierista degli Spinal Tap, David Kaffinetti!). Ho personalmente chiuso e mollato a 30 anni nel 1991, quand’ ecco che incontro Jon Ginoli per formare i Pansy Division nell`ottobre 1991.
Ho pero` continuato a fare da mentore e producer ad altri gruppi, oltre a comparsare da bassista turnista fino al 1984.
Nel 2001 ho dunque cambiato residenza a L.A. per continuare e dedicarmi ai Pansy Division, principalmente.
Italia, o perlomeno Europa, quando avrete intenzione di venirci a trovare ?

Four years ago with the Gayc|Dc line up, the stage has been hitten upside down, loud and proud.
And that`s “the story so far ” !

We all know You for the awesome music and lyrics devoted to Pansy Division.
But here We are again with something which gives a sense of variety !
1 How did it comes the idea of start a tributeband (very originally) Ac<Dc?
Has been Your personal idea or have You ever discussed with some of Your current line up members?
I moved to LA in 2001 (from San Francisco) and met a large group of gay musicians and a thriving music community.
Around 2003, some of them asked if I wanted to join an all-gay tribute to the Go-Go’s called the Gay Gay’s and so
we did that for about 10 years before calling it quits, although we later played a Go-Go’s after-party for Jane Wiedlin.
A few of us wanted to continue to play together and we threw out some random band names that could incorporate the word
‘gay’ and when Karl said “GayC/DC,” I thought, yeah, that would work!
2 Actually how should You introduce by heart how everyone started to joined the band ? I have read
on the bio how anyway Pansy Division on tour have effected part of that cooperation, now become reality.
Karl (rhythm guitar) and Brian (drums) were both friends that I had known for years and brought into later versions
of the Gay Gay’s. I had met Steve (lead guitar) on a gay hook-up website (Daddyhunt). I was scrolling through and
saw this handsome guy and saw that he was a guitar player, so I messaged him asking if he liked AC/DC and if he would
be interested in playing with us. After he joined, we looked for a singer for quite a while. When no one would audition,
I finally told the band to audition me. They said I should sing and I asked Glen (who I had first met around ’97 while
on tour with Pansy Division) to play bass.
3 The presence on the stage is quite catchy and entertaining. Setting up a tourdate how many time You all
dedicate picking the outfits? So far dresses and make up add some sugar and spices for the audience.
As well as working hard to get the AC/DC sound down, we all put a TON of thought into our stage clothes.
And they’ve evolved nicely, I think, looking at our early photos to the latest batch. The one thing I
encouraged from the beginning with GayC/DC is that we each have our own personality, just go for it.
The aesthetics of AC/DC is simple black t-shirt and jeans, all looking the same (except the schoolboy outfit),
so we went for the opposite. I use t-shirts as statements for each song and I layer clothing before I go onstage,
taking off each layer as the show progresses. For our Angus, it was more restricted since you have that iconic image,
so we went with a short skirt, schoolgirl style. And he wears a tie with it, so some of the images you expect from
AC/DC show up but in a twisted manner.
4 Was it 2015, back in the days the first gig with Seb Bach? How many buzzes has been spread
before You started to rehearse in the studio?
GayC/DC actually played its first shows in 2013, so we already had a following before
Sebastian Bach played with us. But right from the beginning, people were responding to us positively.
5 Have You ever thought to record with a label a LP, with Your favourite covers?
No, I don’t think there are that many people interested in hearing me do that.
A few maybe, but not enough to warrant going to all the trouble of getting musicians,
spending money on recording, and so on. I’m a songwriter, so I’m always wanting to just get my own
songs out there.
6 Please one random word to define Steve, Glen, Karl and Brian.
Just one word is FAR too difficult, so I will give you 2 for each:
Steve – guitar genius, Glen – band clown, Karl – quick wit, Brian – thoughtful worrier
7 How Would You feel if a brand new tribute band would play Pansy Division on a hetero version?
And how Bon and Angus heard Your crazy good versions?
That would be great! Maybe it would be all-female! I do know that there’s a Pansy Division tribute record being worked on,
and a band called Shaolin Monks from Seattle (a band with only one gay member) is doing “Dick Of Death,” so there you have it!
As far as I know, the AC/DC camp is aware of us, although I’m not sure if they’ve bothered to pull
up a video on YouTube and listened to us
8 So far , how can You snap Your career from the Atachments untill now?
Wow, you’ve done your homework! That’s quite a ways back! Attachments was basically my third band when
I lived in Seattle. Before that, I had a band with high school friends called Relic (after the Pink Floyd
album title) from 1978-80. Then I joined a band called Little Wing in 1980 and we played the first-ever
NW Metal Fest at the Lake Hills Roller Rink in Bellevue, WA, in 1981 with TKO and The Mob (a tribute band
that later became Queensryche). Attachments grew out of Little Wing and was active between 1982-85 recording
an album, an EP and a couple of singles before we broke up. Afterward, three out of the six people in the band
stayed together and tried to keep moving forward, including moving to San Francisco in 1987 and playing a few
shows and recording as Vox Opera. That ended in 1989 and I drifted for a year or so, playing in several local bands
(including Model Citizenz with the keyboard player from Spinal Tap, David Kaffinetti!). I had basically called it
quits by the time I turned 30 in 1991, but then saw the ad from Jon Ginoli to form Pansy Division in October of ’91.
I’ve continued to work with bands as a producer/mentor or as an on-call bass player since around 1984. I moved to LA
in 2001 and continued to do that on the side as well as my Pansy Division duties.
9 Italia, or at least Europe, when will You be able to come to visit Us ?
No plans yet for GayC/DC to get over there (we’re working on it!), but Pansy Division will be in Italy for this festival
