INTERVISTA A JOSH HAYDEN.

A seguito della ristampa in vinile dell’edizione remasterizzata ed arricchita del debutto degli Spain “The blue moods for Spain” per Rhino Records, abbiamo avuto la grande occasione di poter intervistare il fondatore, bassista e cantante del gruppo Josh Hayden, figlio del leggendario jazzista Charlie Haden. Gli Spain saranno in tour in Italia proprio in questi giorni, con due date : il 14 novembre alla Baumhaus di Bologna e il 16 novembre a Firenze al Nuovo Teatro Lippi a Firenze. Il disco d’esordio degli Spain è una pietra miliare dello slowcore e non solo, una canzone del disco “Spiritual”, è stata reinterpretata anche da Johnny Cash nel suo disco “Unchained” del 1996. Per mezzo di Gary Levermore di Red Sand Pr abbiamo avuto una bellissima chiacchierata con Josh.
– Prima di tutto grazie, ma soprattutto grazie per la musica –
– Prego. –
– Come è nato il gruppo e quale genesi ha avuto il vostro debutto ? –
– La banda è nata per tentativi ed errori. Ho avuto l’idea dopo aver sentito i Cowboy Junkies nel 1988 e ho deciso di scrivere canzoni come John Lee Hooker’ “It Serve You Right To Suffer”. Ho firmato a Los Angeles con un’etichetta discografica chiamata Restless e mi hanno presentato a un produttore di San Francisco, Norm Kerner. Abbiamo registrato “The Blue Moods Of Spain” nel suo studio del gennaio e del febbraio 1995.-
– Quali sensazioni avete avuto durante la registrazione ?–
– Ero davvero felice dell’album. La Restless ha pagato a Norm il suo lavoro (era una cosa ridicolamente bassa come 5000 dollari) e Norm ha dovuto minacciare di cancellare i nastri se non avessero mandato attraverso il suo assegno attraverso il corriere FedEx la notte stessa. Ha ricevuto il suo assegno la mattina seguente. Sono contento che i nastri non siano stati cancellati, anche se Norm mi ha detto che stava solo bluffando.-
– Dove nasce questa meravigliosa malinconia e questo suono elegante ma potente ? –
– Apprezzo il complimento. Non la sento come malinconica, potente o elegante, anche se so cosa intendi. Sto solo cercando di scrivere e registrare la musica migliore che posso. A volte ho successo, la maggior parte delle volte non riesco nel mio intento.-
– Quali erano i tuoi riferimenti musicali in quegli anni ? –
– Sono venuto dal free jazz, dal punk rock e dalla musica improvvisata. Credevo di aver bisogno di imparare a reintrodurlo in un po’ e di imparare la struttura. Il mio riferimento erano i Cowboy Junkies e John Lee Hooker in primo luogo, e gruppi come Eric Clapton e Cream, Cocteau Twins, i Killing Joke di”Outside The Gate”, la banda delle mie sorelle che si chiamava That Dog, gli Spacemen 3 e i Velvet Underground, il lavoro di HR dei Bad Braisn con Ras Michael, Red gli House Painters e molti altre bands e artisti. –
– Senza avere nostalgia, ma gli anni novanta erano speciali grazie anche a dischi come il vostro, cosa ne pensi ? –
– Forse il nostro disco è stata una battuta d’arresto contro la musica popolare dell’epoca come Soundgarden e Pearl Jam, ma non lo so. Stavo solo cercando di fare una buona musica. –
– Il vostro suono è molto ben strutturato, che impprtanza ha il jazz in questo processo ?–
– È molto importante. Il jazz mi dà frasi, tempo, melodia, armonia, contropunto, struttura e temi. –
– Nella tua visione musicale cosa del modo attuale di fruizione digitale della musica ? –
– Penso che vada bene, è il modo in cui il mondo si muove e nessuno può fermarlo. L’edizione del 30° anniversario di “Blue Moods Of Spain” è stata pubblicata sul vinile blu il mese scorso, credo che la gente apprezzi ancora i suoni analogici e i prodotti fisici. –
– Il vostro disco di debutto è magico, poi avete pubblicato altri grandi dischi senza perdere la vostra visione musicale, come avete fatto ? –
– Ancora una volta, apprezzo il complimento. Ma non considero la mia musica magica. Sto solo cercando di lavorare e di vivere. Non ho mai pensato di perdere la mia visione musicale, perché sono un musicista, suono musica, scrivo canzoni, le registro e viaggio in tutto il mondo. Sono davvero grato che la gente voglia ascoltare. Vivere di musica non è facile, ma la stragrande maggioranza delle persone su questo pianeta non è facile, e mi considero molto fortunato ad essere in grado di fare musica. –
– Come vedi il futuro degli Spain ? –
– Continueremo a fare gli spettacoli di “The Blue Moods of Spain” per un po’, produrremo un album di materiale inedito l’anno prossimo. –

– Come libro James Joyce “Ulysses”. Sherwood Anderson con il suo poema “Winesburg, Ohio” e il quadro di Gil Elvgren “Beautiful Lady”. –

– How is the band born and what genesis has your debut record ?-
The band was born through trial and error. I had the idea after hearing Cowboy Junkies in 1988 and deciding to write songs like John Lee Hooker’s It Serve You Right To Suffer. I signed to a record label in Los Angeles called Restless and they introduced me to a producer in San Francisco named Norm Kerner. We recorded The Blue Moods Of Spain at his studio in January and February of 1995.
– Recording the record what feelings you had ?-
I was really happy with the album. Restless was on the fence about paying Norm his fee (it was something ridiculously low like $5,000) and Norm had to threaten to erase the tapes if they didn’t FedEx overnight his check. He got his check the next morning. I’m happy the tapes weren’t erased, even though Norm told me he was just bluffing.
– Where is born this beautiful melancholy but powerful and elegant sound? –
I appreciate the compliment. I don’t hear it as melancholy, powerful, or elegant, although I know what you mean. I’m just trying to write and record music the best I can. Sometimes I’m successful, most of the time I’m not.
– What was your reference music scene in those years? –
I came from free jazz and punk rock. Improvisational music. I think I needed to learn how to rein it in a little, and learn about structure. My reference was Cowboy Junkies and John Lee Hooker, firstly, and groups like Eric Clapton and Cream, Cocteau Twins, Killing Joke’s “Outside The Gate”, my sisters’ band that dog., Spacemen 3 and Velvet Underground, HR’s work with Ras Michael, Red House Painters, and a bunch of other bands and artists.
– Without nostalgia, but the 1990s were also special for records like yours, what do you think? –
Maybe it was a backlash against loud popular music of the time like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, but I don’t know. I was just trying to make good music.
– Your sound is very well structured, how important is jazz in this process ? –
It’s very important. Jazz gives me phrasing, tempo, melody, harmony, counterpoint, structure, and themes.
– In your musical vision what do you think about the current digital way of listening to music ? –
I think it’s fine. It’s the way the world is moving. No one can stop it. The Blue Moods Of Spain 30th Anniversary Edition was released on blue vinyl last month. I think people still appreciate analog sounds and physical product.
– The debut record is magical, then you made great records without ever losing your musical vision, it’s not easy at all, how did you do ? –
Again, I appreciate the compliment. But I don’t consider my music as magical. I’m just trying to work, and make a living. I’ve never considered losing my musical vision, because I’m a musician. I play music. I write songs, record them, and travel around the world playing them. I’m just really grateful people want to listen. Making a living with music isn’t easy, but the overwhelming majority of people on this planet don’t have it easy. I consider myself very lucky to be able to make music.
– How do you see the future of Spain? –
We’re going to keep doing The Blue Moods Of Spain shows for a while. I will record an album of new material next year.
