Chris Doherty of Gang Green’s First Performance in Four Years

This halloween will mark the 4 year anniversary of a major stroke that Chris Doherty suffered. Doherty is the singer and guitarist for Boston based hardcore punk band Gang Green.

Doherty made his first public appearance since 2018 at the Midway Cafe in Boston, MA on October 1, 2022. Doherty formed the band Gang Green in 1980 in Braintree, Massachusetts with Bill Manley and Mike Dean. Doherty has remained the only original member after several line up changes and multiple hiatuses. After 7 albums, a stint in Boston band, Jerry’s Kids, playing hundreds of hardcore punk shows, and suffering a major lifechanging stroke,  Doherty remains active in the punk rock community.

The Welch Boys, Guns of Brighton, The Hagglers and The Golly Geewillikers all shared the stage. The club is pretty dark inside and everyone is super friendly. It is lit up with Christmas lights on the stage that surround a gigantic sign stating, “Midway Cafe, Bar, Live Music, Est. 1987.” Midway Cafe streams all their shows, you can view this show here at starting at 06:01

Chris Doherty

Guns of Brighton are a 3 piece punk band from Lynn, Massachusetts. They opened the show and played a couple of original songs before bringing their friend, Chris Doherty up to shine in the spotlight. Their sound is incredible and they make a 3 piece band sound like a 6 piece with gravelly vocals and falling, catchy chords. Doherty was welcomed on stage with a giant round of a pause, banging drums, and guitar riffs, and he stated, “I was born ready mother fuckers!” then began to sing as if nothing ever had happened to him.

Next up were The Hagglers, a 3 piece fast, raw, and steady street  punk band with a phenomenal bassist. The Hagglers, reigning from Boato  had catchy riffs, choruses and are all around top notch songwriters.

The high energy trio The Golly Geewillikers was a perfect day to close the night out. They are an indie punk band from Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Gang Green is an American punk rock band originally from Braintree, Massachusetts. Chris Doherty (guitar), Bill Manley (bass) and Mike Dean (drums) started the band in 1980 and broke up in 1983. Doherty reformed Gang Green the following year, and the band experienced numerous lineup changes until its dissolution for the second time in 1992. Doherty has been the band’s only constant member and has kept Gang Green active from 2005 onwards. Happy to hear Chris recovered and is still able to do what he loves. Down to earth guy. Chatted with him and Brian after a late 80s show in Detroit. They were supporting Social D. Cheers Chris! Keep on rockin’ 🍻

As a debut it is very positive, to be listened to and enjoyed as an antidote to defeats, and it is proof of how a group of friends in a relatively short time since their formation can produce a well-composed and well-played record, all without being professionals, and this is a very important message.
