Hate In The Box - Razorblade Fairy Tales
Pamela Torres
SNIP SNIP SNIP, shiny black scissors,
glinting so bright on her milk white neck.
Slitting my lips with paper cut kisses
wrenching my heart as I cut through her flesh.
Hailing all the way from New York City, Hate in the Box is a creepy and colorful rock band formed by DJ Optimus Crime, grimball guitarist Teddy Kreugar, and candy minx vocalist and lyricist Rainbow Blight.
Released independently by the group in 2003, the first CD I was able to get my hands on, a raggedy angst 8-track EP titled "RazorBlade Fairy Tales," will definitely leave you in stitches. It's a raw and broken playground of grunge guitars, gingerdead keyboard melodies, and a patchwork of lyrics that mix bloodcurdling scenes of murder with innocent little girls in torn lace dresses. Basically, if Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids recruited a female lead singer, this is what the band would sound like!
The album's opener "Porcelain" enters the mind of a ladykiller who drowns his latest victim and wraps her stiff body in plastic. "Malevolent Symphony" is a macabre dance of death performed by Siamese twins joined at the hip. The humorous "Cannibal's Love Song" is a nightmare lullaby served as a late night snack for that monster under the bed. "Paper Cut Kisses" is a grisly pleasure killing that makes limb amputation almost as enjoyable as arts and crafts. DID I SAY ALMOST? "Bloody Ballerina" is self-explanatory: this particular song focuses on an antique mechanical doll that has faded with time and spins a suicide pirouhette with animated gears. "Little Matchstick Girl" addresses the cold reality of poverty and the neverending abuse inflicted onto the lower class. Last but certainly not least, prepare to end it all with "Candy Coated Razorblade," a brusing love anthem about unhealthy relationships.
If you are looking for a little something to listen to while playing with your Callalilly dolls and pouring deadly nightshade into your partner's tea cup, I recommend you give Hate in the Box's "RazorBlade" a shot, along with the group's more recent recording "Under the Ice."
